Apple Pie - A mixture of many recipes and Mom's apple pie
Phase 1: Crust (night before)
Hardware:
1 Bowl to mix everything in.
Ingredients (double this or make 2 batches for lattice):
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of butter, chilled and diced
1/2 cup of shortening
1/4 cup of water
1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions:
a) In bowl combine flour and salt
b) Cut butter and combine with shortening directly into bowl and mix until coarse crumbs
c) Stir in water a tablespoon at a time until mixture forms into ball
d) Wrap in plastic and place in fridge for 4 hours or overnight
Phase 2: Apple Pie
Hardware:
1 Bowl to mix sauce for the insides
1 Pie plate to make the apple pie in and put in the oven.
1 Brush to brush some milk or syrup over top lattice
Ingredients (double this or make 2 batches for lattice):
2-3 cups of peeled, cored, sliced apples (tart apples better)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white/brown sugar
3/4 cup of margarine, melted
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions:
a) Roll dough 9" and lattice and cut lattice into strips
b) Place dough bottom of plate and add your apples
c) Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar mixture around the apples
d) Make bowl of sauce (sugar, margarine, flour, salt)
e) Pour over apples
f) Cover pie with lattice strips and brush milk (or syrup in hot hot water mixed) over top of pieg) 65 minutes at 350 degrees (maybe start 15 minutes at 400 then drop to 350 to finish off)
